Closure of Logan City Museum. Relocation of the Logan City Museum. With the recent announcement by the Logan City Council that the old Kingston Butter Factory is to undergo a complete refurbishment and fit out. This will transform the usage of the building into a new Innovations Hub. As a consequence of these changes, the Logan City Museum will be temporarily moved to a new location at the old Supre building located adjacent to the Logan Central Library in Wilbur Street. The Museum has officially closed its doors to visitors from the 12th November 2018 at its present site at the KBF. The transition and removal of all our collection is a large undertaking and it is not expected that the Logan City Museum will be reopening at the new site in Wilbur Street until early in 2019. It is important to note that this move is a temporary relocation and the Logan Council is planning on building a new home for the Logan City Museum as a purpose built Heritage Centre. The siting of this building is proposed to be adjacent to old caretaker’s cottage and next to the Milky Way access on the grounds of the KBF.

The members of the Logan City Museum were saddened to learn of the passing of Lawrence “Lawrie” Strange recently. Lawrie was instrumental in the establishment of the Logan City Museum and was our inaugural President and served and promoted the Museum right up until the time that ill health prevented him from continuing in this role. In his position as the Executive Officer of the Australian Bicentennial Authority (Queensland Division) Lawrie was the architect behind gaining funds for the renovation of the Kingston Butter Factory and its refurbishment and re-purposing as a Community Centre. This was made possible with the support of the Logan City Council and the building can today be seen as a lasting legacy to Lawrie’s efforts and passion.Lawrie’s contributions to the Logan City Museum were recognized when he was awarded the first Life Membership of the Society.
Lawrie’s contribution to his local and statewide community were recognized on the 12th June 1989 when it was announced that he had been awarded the Medal of the Order Of Australia for his services to the community, particularly through the Australian Bicentennial Celebrations.
Lawrie’s funeral arrangements are outlined below. The Logan City Museum passes on their sincere condolences to his wife Pam and all the members of his family.
Lawrie will be sadly missed but he has left an enduring legacy at the Museum and will always be remembered with respect and affection.
August 16th 2017 saw the 40th Anniversary of the death of the rock and roll legend Elvis Aaron Presley. On this date if Elvis was still alive he would now be 82 years old !!! The Logan City Museum has put together a small display of Elvis memorabilia as a way of showing our tribute to one of the true legends and icon of the music industry.

In July 2017, the Museum was able to acquire a lovely, large walk around display cabinet. The case once belonged to the Mt Gravatt library and after it was found to be surplus to their requirements , the Museum was fortunate enough to acquire it. Delivering it to the Museum was a fairly mammoth task and manhandling into its present location within the Museum was also a rather daunting and back breaking exercise….but after a lot of sweat and tears it was finally positioned. It is a valuable addition to the Museum and will enhance our display capability.

In July the Museum was fortunate enough to be able to embark on a building project to add additional storage space to the office and work area of the Museum. Thanks to funding gained from a successful submission to the Community Gambling Fund, the Museum has been able to incorporate a new mezzanine floor in the afor mentioned space. This is a godsend to the Museum as it more than doubles our available storage area for our extensive collection of exhibition and collection related material.
The new carpets have been laid, come on down and see for yourself, new look and feel to match the start of a brand new year – all welcome.

It’s impossible to work out just how many volunteer hours Graham has put in to help preserve and share the story of our local area and that’s why he was recognised as a Local Legend at our awards ceremony held on the 23rd January 2017. Congratulations, Graham!
